nd Grade - Connecting Life Science Standards to the farm! (2.4.2.1.1, 2.4.3.1.1) Students will be introduced to plant parts and germination requirements through corn and soybean production on farms. We will discuss the different lifecycles that both plants and animals go through on the farm and how they are connected in feed as well! Students will dissect a bean seed and they will create an individual greenhouse to watch their own bean plant grow!
rd Grade - Cheeseburgers and farming...how are they connected? Connecting food to the farm can be difficult for consumers! 3rd graders will see if they can match the raw products that were used to make the food they see at the grocery store. They will focus on the cheeseburger, learning about both crop and livestock production as they learn about how the cheeseburger was made possible by farmers, processing factories, trucks, and grocery stores. We will also play a game to see what they learned by matching grocery store items they know to what farmers grow to make it all possible!
th Grade - 4th graders will learn all about Livestock and how the products they consume and use from animals are far more than they realize! We will focus on terminology used to describe livestock, how different species are raised for meat, fiber, and talk about animal by-products that are created from animals. We will also learn about digestion in livestock and how it is different and similiar to humans, based on the livestock species. We will look at meat differences of the different species, talk about milk, and also be able to match everyday household and clothing items to the livestock species!
th Grade - How does the soil play a part in all food getting to the grocery store? Students will learn about standards for 5th grade relating to the Nature of Science and Engineering Interactions Among Science, Engineering Technology and Society! (5.3.1.2.1) Soil is the basis of everything! Students will learn about the importance of plants and soil and how soil is created, all about the importance of organic matter in growing crops and taking care of this precious resource that sustains life on earth! Each student will learn about different crops and feeding livestock. Each student will learn how to "texture" soil and about the 3 soil separates (sand, silt, and clay). They will also be able to identify all the soil seperates and understand the different types of soil found in others areas of our country.
th Grade - Nutrition is important to every person, and it is also important to livestock. Students will learn about how cows eat different feed to meet their needs just as humans follow the "my plate" recommendations of the USDA to be healthy. Students will observe many different rations that we feed our calves, heifers, lactating cows, and dry cows.
