February Lesson: Heifer Growth Cycle
- Why is it important that calves get colostrum?It is essential to the health of the calf it provide nutrition and immunity
- At what age do the calves begin drinking milk out of buckets? 21 days old
- How old are the heifers when they are vaccinated? 5 months for the first vaccination and 8 months for the booster
- What are the names of the two farms on the video? Turkey Creek and Coronado
- How many days is a heifer/cow pregnant? 283 days
- How often are the heifers checked on when they are close to having their calf? Every 20-30 minutes- 24 hours a day
January Part 2 Lesson: Winter Farming in Arizona
1. What products do we get from milk and dairy cows? Dairy products including yogurt, ice-cream, butter, cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, etc.
2. What is your favorite dairy product? Kids should name their favorite dairy product.
3. Where does the milk go after it leaves the cow? Milk goes into the tanker. Then it is delivered to the processor where it is made into a dairy product, packaged, and shipped to stores. All Riverview milk goes to make cheese.
4. What is pasteurization? Why is it important? Pasteurization is the quick heating and cooling of milk in a short period of time. Pasteurization kills any bacteria and ensures dairy products are safe.
January Part 1 Lesson: Winter Farming in Arizona
- What crops do we grow on our farm in Arizona? In the winter? In the summer? Corn, wheat and triticale. Winter- wheat and triticale, summer- corn
- What nozzle is used for germination? The stream plate or spray nozzle.
- How do the pivot towers know when to move forward? One tower is the “boss” and tells the others when to move forward.
- How tall does the crop need to be before we switch nozzle types? 6 inches tall
- What nozzle do we use most of the growing season? Why? Bubbler nozzle because it prevents evaporation because it encapsulates the water in air.
- What is the end use of the wheat grown in Arizona? It is fermented and turned into wheatlage a type of insulgae and is fed in a TMR to the heifers.

1. What is corn silage? The entire corn plant chopped up. It is an important nutritional component of a cow’s diet.
2. A ruminant is an animal that has four compartments in their stomach to help in food digestion.
3. How many pounds is in a ton? 2,000lbs
4. What does the cover on the silage pile do? Keeps the feed fresh and protects it from outside elements and prevents it from spoiling. The cover also helps with the fermentation process.
5. What is fermentation? Production of acidic bacteria which helps break down the feed making it easier for cow digestion.
