Minnesota Elementary Programs Available

Kindergarten - Let's learn about the different types of livestock on farms, the sounds they make and what they eat!  Students will learn about these livestock species by using play-dough to complete their animal parts on colorful mats.  We will also have story time with a book about farm animals.

1st Grade - From MOO to YOU! (1.4.1.1., 1.4.2.1.1, 1.4.2.1.2., 1.4.3.1.1) Students will learn about the products farm animals produce and the steps in getting those products from the farm to our home. Students will learn about the names used for the female, male and young of each species and eventually get to make their own cow.

2nd Grade - Connecting Life Science Standards to the farm!  (2.4.2.1.1, 2.4.3.1.1)  Students will be introduced to plant parts and germination requirements through corn and soybean production on farms.  We will discuss the different lifecycles that both plants and animals go through on the farm and how they are connected in feed as well!  Students will dissect a bean seed and they will create an individual greenhouse to watch their own bean plant grow!

3rd Grade -  Cheeseburgers and farming...how are they connected?  Connecting food to the farm can be difficult for consumers!  3rd graders will see if they can match the raw products that were used to make the food they see at the grocery store.  They will focus on the cheeseburger, learning about both crop and livestock production as they learn about how the cheeseburger was made possible by farmers, processing factories, trucks, and grocery stores. We will also play a game to see what they learned by matching grocery store items they know to what farmers grow to make it all possible!

4th Grade - 4th graders will see how livestock and products they consume and use from animals are far more than they realize!  We will focus on terminology used to describe livestock, how different species are raised for meat, fiber, and talk about animal by-products that are created from animals.  In a different lesson, we will use our knowledge of climate and landforms to study food production regions throughout the United States. (4.3.4.10.1, 4.3.4.10, 4.3.3.6.1, 4.3.2.3.1)

5th Grade - How does the soil play a part in all food getting to the grocery store?  Students will learn about standards for 5th grade relating to the Nature of Science and Engineering Interactions Among Science, Engineering Technology and Society!  (5.3.1.2.1) Soil is the basis of everything!  Students will learn about the importance of plants and soil and how soil is created, all about the importance of organic matter in growing crops and taking care of this precious resource that sustains life on earth!   Each student will learn about different crops and feeding livestock.  Each student will learn how to "texture" soil and about the 3 soil separates (sand, silt, and clay).  They will also be able to identify all the soil separates and understand the different types of soil found in others areas of our country.

6th Grade - Nutrition is important to every person, and it is also important to livestock.  Students will learn about how cows eat different feed to meet their needs just as humans follow the "my plate" recommendations of the USDA to be healthy.  Students will observe many different rations that we feed our calves, heifers, lactating cows, and dry cows.
